Herstory Inventory UPDATE

Looks like the little piece I did for Ulrike Muller's HERSTORY INVENTORY is on the move again. In her words:

Herstory Inventory will be presented in two exhibitions this spring: the first opening on April 20 at the Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria, the second at the Brooklyn Museum on June 28. Then, over the summer, I am planning to put together a publication, in time for a book release party in September

Again I must thank Penny Boyer for reaching out to female artists that she knew to aide in Ulrike's vision. Ulrike started this before her residency at ArtPace back in 2010 and has been gathering small 8x10 pieces from female artists around the globe. It was a fun collaboration. She saw my website and then gave me 'an assignment' to which the finished piece is a reflection of said 'assignment'. I'm excied to be part of this GIANT collaboration...

Ulrike Müller (b. in Vorarlberg, lives and works in New York) bases her work on conceptual practices to engage with the sociopolitical potential of artistic activity. A central interest is her exploration of the ambivalences of contemporary gender constructions beyond binary categorizations of identity such as man/woman, hetero/homo. In addition to drawing, painting, video, sound works, and performance, collaborations with other cultural producers are a focus of her practice.

Her project Herstory Inventory presented for the first time at the KUB Arena has its point of departure in the Lesbian Herstory Archives, an independently organized archive in Brooklyn, New York, which seeks to document lesbian culture and history through publications and objects such as t-shirts, buttons, and flyers without nailing down the ephemeral nature of sub-cultural movements. While researching onsite Müller came across an inventory list of t-shirts compiled by an archive volunteer. Originally produced as codes between members of a community, these t-shirts express desires and political opinions and alliances, sometimes humorously, sometimes angrily. Their translation into lines of poetic text that describe in loving detail the images and graphic elements of the t-shirts collected since the 1970s is what underpins the work Herstory Inventory presented on the ground floor of the Kunsthaus.

The 5-channel audio installation of the same name goes back to a performative reading of the texts that Ulrike Müller gave together with the artists Nancy Brooks, Emma Hedditch, Zoe Leonard, and MPA in 2009. In the exhibition space the voices generate new associations among the various slogans. At the same time, the work pays homage to a polyphonic range of activist positions in feminist history.

In connection with this audio work Müller invited 100 internationally known artists to translate the textual descriptions into new pictures. Her invitation to rethink images from the history of feminism turns the inventory of the Lesbian Herstory Archives into a source and reference point for a wealth of artistic designs. In a wide range of styles, formats, and approaches, the pictorial translations of the texts enact personal attitudes toward lesbian feminist imagery, confronting them with their queer feminist actualizations. Against the backdrop of the history of the movement, drawing becomes an act of political engagement with the historical insignia, symbols, and positions of US lesbian feminist discourse.

The drawings are presented as part of an installation Müller developed specially for the KUB Arena. Alongside references to 1970s interiors, she has incorporated Maria Lassnig’s work “Einen Hund besitzen” (1975) from the KUB Collection into the exhibition. This self-portrait with German shepherd is an early example of Lassnig’s animal pictures that have kept appearing in her work since her stay in New York from 1968 to 1980.

The honey-yellow surface that spreads over the KUB Arena architecture opens a space in which individual and collective, artistic and curatorial, contemporary and past gestures interweave, challenging us to think creative action also in relation to sociopolitical issues. In Herstory Inventory, a project that impressively breaks down the traditional distinction between group and solo exhibitions, Ulrike Müller uses the archive as a catalyst for new artistic works. The historical starting points of the translations of the objects described in the archive collection are not something unambiguous and absolute here, but rather are versatile, adaptable points of reference that extend into the present.

Chalk It Up! + Ixtlanau

So it's finally happened, Alex and I are exhibitiing together.

Yes, Alex will be in San Antonio. If ya wanna meet the elusive brother I speak of often, and see his art work as well as see some new stuff by me, come on down to SoHo Wine and Martini Bar (214 Crockett) on Saturday Nov 20th from 7-10pm.

Chalk It Up!!!

So this Saturday October 9th, is ArtPace's Chalk It Up!

It's downtown on Houston Street between 10am-4pm
And once again, I will be 'chalking it up'.

This year I'm a 'showcase' artist, and my piece is gonna be 15'x20'...
You know what this means, I will not be up late drinking Friday night.
Pfft, I probably just jinxed myself.

I've decided to do one of my mythology 'characters', if ya wanna know which one will make it's public debut, ya gotta come on down ::wink::

Interpol 8.21 Miami Beach

House lights dimmed, stage lights flickered bright blue, familiar silouhettes sauntered on the stage and the crowd roared...so began the Interpol show at the Jackie Gleason Fillmore Theater in Miami on August 21st.

It had been since Sept 2007 when they were touring with their less than stellar third album, 'Our Love to Admire', but it was Interpol and I needed a live fix...and though I was disappointed w/ the show I saw, I figured they would be back and back on track, and well my prediction was correct.

They've been touring the east coast of the US for the their upcoming fourth album, which drops on September 7th, and conveniently titled INTERPOL...from what I read in blogs and on the Interpol message board, I was looking forward to a set of favourites and they delivered.

They have a habit of starting a show w/ the first track from the album that they are promoting, and this show was no different. Paul spoke GASP!!!! 'Hello...welcome'. And they started the hour long main set with 'Success'. I had yet to hear it, and I liked it. They then went into the first of many from 'Turn on the Bright Lights' with 'Say Hello to the Angels' and the crowd loved it...dancing and singing and the band absorbed the energy we fed them. Not sure if it was the electricity from the storm brewing outside or the crowd itself, but the room was ALIVE....Paul spoke again... 'Thank you very much' and went into the first from 'Antics'...'C'mere'...once again the crowd went wild singing in unison. I think Paul was shocked by all the love b/c he thanked the crowd again.
They then played the second of the four new songs, 'Summer Well'. Paul uttered more words with the applauds 'Thank you very much, that was 'Summer Well'. This next song was inspired by time spent here in Miami'. After I came to due to the fact that he spoke two sentences in a row to a crowd, I was glad to hear 'Rest My Chemistry'. The only song from 'Our Love to Admire' album, which happens to be my fave track from that album. 'Evil' was next and EVERYONE was singing....'Rooossssemaaary....' 'Thank you very much' came out of Paul's mouth. And the the third song from the new album was played, 'Lights'. I am familiar with this one because they have a great video for it. After the song, Paul spoke again, 'thank you very much that one was called 'Lights''. He then continued to talk about the tour. I was standing next to a dude who looked at me 'not sure you're familiar with seeing them live, but I'm shocked he's so chatty.' I laughed and replied 'No kidding. This is my 5th time and yes, he's on a roll'. They then played 'Narc', my fave song from 'Antics'...and followed it with a dedication for the next song, 'Take You on a Cruise'...'This goes to a lovely lady, Christie Bush'....crowd was clapping and singing and then more singing came due to, 'Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down'. That was fun. They did some sorta free form jamming thing and that went into the last of the new songs, 'Try It On'. 'PDA' was the last from 'Turn on the Bright Lights' for the main set, and they ended the main set with 'Not Even Jail'...

They took a 2 maybe 3 minute break and came back on for a three song encore, and Paul was chatting some more....'Thank you, so that's Brandon, and that's Dave'. I miss Carlos manning the bass, but Dave Pajo did a good job of filling those holster wearing shoes of Carlos. They played 'NYC', 'Slow Hands', and ended the show with 'Obstacle 1'. I was not expecting to hear 'Slow hands' or 'Obstacle 1' because of some of the set lists I had seen prior to this show, but I sure was happy to hear one of my all time fave Interpol tunes, 'Obstacle 1'. They ended the show with Paul saying some stuff, but I couldn't hear it. I did record 'Success', 'Rest My Chemistry', 'Narc', 'Slow Hands', and 'Obstacle 1'....
